Volk Accountant vs TidyBooks
TidyBooks is the cheapest provider in the field at €20 a month. The question is what that price includes — and what comes after it.
Details from the providers’ public pages, checked on 20 September 2026
Volk Accountant and TidyBooks compared
TidyBooks costs 20 euros a month, which is less than Volk Accountant's Starter plan at 29 euros. The difference is what that price contains. Volk Accountant produces the Cyprus VAT return and the VIES statement from your own books and assigns both to the Starter plan. TidyBooks mentions neither VAT-4 nor VIES nor reverse charge anywhere on its website; it lists VAT tracking and a VAT checker instead, and the filings themselves are handled by a partner accountant in a service package starting at 2,000 euros a year. The second difference concerns your accountant: with Volk Accountant their access is included in every plan, at TidyBooks only from the Pro plan at 39 euros. TidyBooks also has the shortest trial in the field at seven days.

Which one fits whom
Both are built for Cyprus. What differs is who does the filings.
You want the Cyprus filings to come out of the software
- VAT-4 and VIES come from your books, from €29 a month
- Your accountant gets access on every plan, not only from €39
- Your customers read a different language than the tax office

You intend to hire a bookkeeper anyway
- You would rather hand VAT and VIES over than produce them
- With a partner accountant from €2,000 a year the software is free
- You need payroll, beta included
- You are switching from another program and want migration help

Both read receipts automatically and connect bank accounts. On the Cyprus obligations — the VAT return, the VIES statement and reverse charge — the TidyBooks column shows a dash throughout. That does not mean the software cannot do it: it means TidyBooks publishes nothing about it.

What sets Volk Accountant and TidyBooks apart?
Both are built for Cyprus. Three differences carry the decision.
Software against service
Volk Accountant produces VAT-4 and VIES from your own books, included in Starter at €29. TidyBooks mentions neither VAT-4 nor VIES nor reverse charge anywhere on its website and has the partner accountant do both — from €2,000 net a year.
Access included, not from €39
With Volk Accountant, accountant access is in every plan, with a portal laid out like Tax For All. At TidyBooks, Accountant Collaboration belongs to the Pro plan at €39 a month.
Fourteen days rather than seven
Volk Accountant gives 14 days to try it, TidyBooks seven. For accounting software that matters, because a full month-end close rarely falls inside a week.
Plans: €20 against €29
Both cards show the same list. The gap is nine euros — the question is what for.
- YesVAT-4 and VIES stated for this plan
- YesAccountant access included in the plan
- YesInvoices in several currencies
- YesReceipts read automatically
- YesConnect and reconcile bank accounts
- not publishedVAT-4 and VIES stated for this plan
- NoAccountant access included in the plan
- YesInvoices in several currencies
- YesReceipts read automatically
- YesConnect and reconcile bank accounts
On receipt recognition, bank connections and multi-currency the two are level. The nine-euro gap stands against two things the TidyBooks Starter plan does not contain: accountant access, which belongs to their Pro plan at €39, and the Cyprus filings, about which TidyBooks publishes nothing.
So if you have an accountant and want to give them access, the comparison is not €20 against €29 but €39 against €29.
Where TidyBooks does more than we do
A comparison page that finds nothing good in the competitor is advertising. These are documented advantages, checked 20 September 2026.
- The entry price is lower. €20 against our €29, with 20% off when paid yearly.
- Payroll, currently marked beta, at €5 per employee.
- Migration support when switching from another program, named as a service of its own.
- A brokered accountant at a fixed price by transaction volume — with the software included.
TidyBooks and Volk Accountant: common questions
Which accounting software is better for Cyprus: TidyBooks or Volk Accountant?
It depends on who does the Cyprus filings. Volk Accountant produces the VAT return and the VIES statement from your books, and both sit in the Starter plan at €29 a month. TidyBooks costs €20 but mentions neither VAT-4 nor VIES nor reverse charge anywhere on its website — what it lists is VAT tracking and a VAT checker. The filings are handled by a partner accountant from €2,000 a year. On top of that comes accountant access: included in every one of our plans, at TidyBooks only from Pro at €39. TidyBooks is the better choice if you intend to hire a bookkeeper anyway — the software then comes free.
What does TidyBooks cost compared with Volk Accountant?
TidyBooks has two software plans: Starter at €20 and Pro at €39 a month, with 20% off when paid yearly. Volk Accountant starts at €29 and its Business plan is €49. On the headline entry price TidyBooks is €9 cheaper. The comparison only becomes like-for-like once you look at the same work: our Starter includes VAT-4 and VIES, while at TidyBooks that is what the service package is for, starting at €2,000 net a year and rising to €5,500 by transaction volume.
Does TidyBooks do the Cyprus VAT return and VIES?
Not as a stated software feature. We checked the full website on 20 September 2026, including the page source rather than just the visible text: the terms VIES, VAT-4, reverse charge, Tax For All and Taxisnet do not appear a single time. What is listed is VAT and tax management with automatic calculations, plus a VAT checker. On the service page, by contrast, it says explicitly: “VAT & VIES: Quarterly VAT and Monthly VIES preparation and submission.” So at TidyBooks that work is done by the partner accountant, not by the software.
Is accountant access free at TidyBooks?
No. Accountant Collaboration is a feature of the Pro plan at €39 a month; the €20 Starter plan does not include it. At Volk Accountant, accountant access is in every plan, including Starter at €29, and they get a portal of their own laid out like Tax For All. So if you have an accountant and want to give them access, the comparison is not €20 against €29 but €39 against €29.
How long can I try TidyBooks?
Seven days. That is the shortest trial among the Cyprus providers: Volk Accountant gives 14 days, Sumly and Balabook 30 each. TidyBooks states that nothing is charged during the trial and that you can cancel at any time. For accounting software a week is tight, because a full month-end close rarely falls inside it.
What can TidyBooks do that Volk Accountant cannot?
Three things. Payroll, currently marked as beta and charged at €5 per employee. Migration support when switching from another program, which TidyBooks names as a service of its own. And a brokered accountant through the service package, where the software is included at no extra cost. Volk Accountant sells software only and brokers no bookkeeping.
