Volk Accountant vs Balabook
Balabook starts cheaper than we do and does several things we don't. This page says both — and works out what you actually end up paying.

Volk Accountant and Balabook compared
Balabook and Volk Accountant are both accounting tools for Cyprus, and both produce the VAT return and the VIES statement from your own books. Balabook has two software plans: Standard at 30 euros and Growing at 50 euros a month, both plus VAT and both including VAT and VIES. At Volk Accountant they are included in the Starter plan at 29 euros. The headline price is not the whole story, because Balabook caps usage: every plan carries a monthly allowance of 400 or 800 AI credits that receipt scans and invoices are charged against, and unused credits expire at month end. By Balabook's own usage table a retail business needs around 770 credits and therefore the 50-euro plan. Volk Accountant does not meter usage. The clearest difference in substance is invoice language: Volk Accountant sends every invoice in the language your customer reads and translates the line items automatically; Balabook publishes nothing about the output language of invoices.

Which one fits whom
Balabook is cheaper and does more in a few places. The difference is in what you meet while working.
Your customers and the tax office do not read the same language
- You want invoices in your customers’ language, with line items translated automatically
- You don’t want to be metered — no allowance that runs out mid-month
- You want your accountant to get a portal laid out like Tax For All
- You want to know where the servers are, not just which economic area
You need payroll, a phone app or OSS returns
- You need Cyprus payroll with IR7 and IR63
- You want an app for iPhone and Android with camera receipt capture
- You sell to private customers in the EU and file OSS returns
- You work in English or Greek and need no third language

Both produce the VIES statement and the VAT return from the same books, both handle reverse charge, and both let you define any VAT rate you like — so the 3% rate can be handled in either program. Accountant access is free in both.

What sets Volk Accountant and Balabook apart?
Both produce the VAT return and VIES from your own books. Three differences carry the decision.
No allowance to run out of
Balabook puts every feature in every plan and caps usage instead: 400 AI credits on Standard, 800 on Growing, expiring at month end. Balabook’s own table puts a retail business at around 770 a month. Volk Accountant has no credit system.
Invoices in your customer’s language
Volk Accountant sends every invoice in the language your customer reads and translates the line items. Balabook publishes nothing about this on any of its pages.
€29 gross against €30 net
Volk Accountant’s Starter is €29 and includes VAT-4 and VIES. Balabook’s Standard is €30 plus VAT. On top of that, your accountant gets a portal laid out like Tax For All.
Plans: what you actually end up paying
Balabook has two software plans, not one. Which applies to you is decided by your receipt volume, not by the headline price.
- YesVAT-4 and VIES included in the plan
- NoInvoices in your customer’s language, line items translated
- YesAccountant portal laid out like Tax For All
- YesNo monthly usage cap on receipts and invoices
- YesScan a receipt straight from your phone
- YesVAT-4 and VIES included in the plan
- not publishedInvoices in your customer’s language, line items translated
- not publishedAccountant portal laid out like Tax For All
- NoNo monthly usage cap on receipts and invoices
- YesScan a receipt straight from your phone
Shown here are the two entry plans, because both cover the same work: the Cyprus VAT return and VIES. Ours is €29, theirs €30 — and their figure is quoted plus VAT, so the gap is larger than one euro.
Above their Standard sits Growing at €50, which is where a business with a lot of receipts lands: Standard carries 400 AI credits a month, Growing 800. Our price does not change with volume. One thing in the list above is not in our Starter but in our Business plan at €49: automatic translation of invoice line items. It stays in the list because it is the difference Balabook does not answer anywhere on its site.
One step up: €49 against €50
- YesReady-made integrations, no programming
- YesInvoices in your customer’s language, line items translated
- YesNo monthly usage ceiling
- YesAPI for your own integrations
- YesUnlimited bank accounts
- not publishedReady-made integrations, no programming
- not publishedInvoices in your customer’s language, line items translated
- NoNo monthly usage ceiling
- YesAPI for your own integrations
- YesUnlimited bank accounts
The second plan is where the two part company most clearly. Our Business plan at €49 adds ready-made integrations — Stripe, PayPal, Shopify, Google Drive, Claude and webhooks — the automatic translation of invoice line items, and still no volume ceiling. Balabook’s Growing at €50 net carries the same features as its Standard, only with 800 credits instead of 400, three users and three payroll employees.
On APIs the two are level: Balabook has an open API and an MCP server, and we have API access from the Business plan. The difference sits before that — Balabook names no individual ready-made connection and points to its own API instead: “Open API & MCP. Connect external apps.” Anyone wanting to connect Stripe or Google Drive builds it themselves there.
Where Balabook does more than we do
A comparison page that finds nothing good in the competitor is advertising. These are documented advantages, checked 19 September 2026.
- The free trial is twice as long. 30 days against our 14, neither requiring a card.
- Cyprus payroll with IR7, IR63, social insurance, GESY and the Holiday Fund. Balabook generates the IR7 return as XML, prepared for Tax For All as well.
- An app for iPhone and Android, in both stores, with camera receipt capture.
- OSS returns for EU distance selling.
- An MCP server with 52 tools, so Claude and ChatGPT can connect directly. We have API access from the Business plan, but no MCP server.
- A complete sub-processor list with nine entries — more disclosure than most providers offer.
Where is your data with Volk Accountant and Balabook?
Server location is one of the few things you can check before signing up rather than after.
Our servers are in Frankfurt and your data stays in the EU — invoices, receipts and the whole ledger. What that means in detail is on our page on data security.
Balabook names no country, only “within the European Union”, and expressly reserves the right to move to a different data centre. What it does disclose is who processes the data: nine sub-processors, including Hetzner in Germany, AWS in Luxembourg and Google in Ireland — plus Cloudflare, GoCardless, New Relic and OpenAI outside the European Economic Area.
Both disclosures are useful, and they answer different questions: where are the servers, and who can reach the data. If either matters to you, check it before you sign up.
Balabook and Volk Accountant: common questions
Which accounting software is better for Cyprus: Balabook or Volk Accountant?
Both produce the VAT return and the VIES statement from your own books, and both let you enter any Cyprus VAT rate. The difference turns on two things. First, usage: Balabook meters receipt scans and invoices against a monthly AI credit allowance that expires at month end – with us there is no allowance to run out of. Second, language: Volk Accountant sends every invoice in the language your customer reads and translates the line items; Balabook publishes nothing about this anywhere on its site. On top of that we give you an accountant portal laid out like Tax For All and a named server location. Balabook is the better choice if you need Cyprus payroll with IR7 and IR63, want an app for iPhone and Android, work in several currencies or file OSS returns.
Is Balabook or Volk Accountant cheaper?
Volk Accountant is cheaper, and it stays cheaper as you grow. Our Starter is €29 a month and includes the VAT return and VIES. Balabook has two software plans: Standard at €30 and Growing at €50 a month, both quoted plus VAT, so €30 net is already above our €29 gross-quoted price. Balabook also caps usage: each plan carries 400 or 800 AI credits a month that receipt scans and invoices are charged against, and unused credits expire. By Balabook's own usage table a retail business needs around 770 credits and therefore the €50 plan, while our price does not change with volume.
What are Balabook's AI credits?
A monthly usage allowance. Balabook meters work against it: a receipt scan costs 1 credit per page, a question to the AI assistant 1, an invoice 3, an analysis 6. Standard includes 400 credits a month, Growing 800; neither included nor purchased credits carry over to the next month. Balabook publishes what it expects: about 46 credits for a sole trader, 151 for a small business, 363 for a busy small business and around 770 for a retail business. From roughly 600 receipt pages a month the Standard plan is no longer enough. Top-ups cost €8 for 100, €21 for 300 or €30 for 500. Volk Accountant does not meter usage (checked 19 September 2026).
What languages do the two write invoices in?
Volk Accountant sends every invoice in the language your customer reads and translates the line items automatically; German and English are available today, Greek and Russian are announced. Balabook's interface is available in English and Greek. On the output language of an invoice and on translating line items, Balabook publishes nothing — the only bilingual statement anywhere on the site concerns payslips (checked 19 September 2026 across 188 help articles and every feature page).
How is the Cyprus VAT return filed with Balabook?
Manually. Balabook's own help centre states: „the submission to the tax authority is not automated. Users are required to export the completed VAT form and manually submit it through the Taxisnet portal." The VAT report can only be downloaded as a PDF. For the IR7 return, by contrast, Balabook generates an XML file that is also prepared for Tax For All.
Where is data stored with Balabook?
Balabook names no country, only „within the European Union", and reserves the right to move to a different data centre. It does however publish a complete sub-processor list with nine entries, including Hetzner in Germany, AWS in Luxembourg and Google in Ireland, plus Cloudflare, GoCardless, New Relic and OpenAI outside the EEA. Volk Accountant names Frankfurt as its server location.
What should I check before buying Balabook?
The pricing page and the help centre contradict each other on several purchase-relevant points (as of 19 September 2026). The pricing page lists payroll in the Standard plan; the help centre says „only on the Growth and Accountant subscription plans". The pricing page says unlimited bank connections; the help centre says three. Extra payroll employees cost €3 on the pricing page and €2 in the help centre. Balabook relaunched its website on 17 September 2026 and the help centre still describes the old plan structure. When in doubt, ask what your plan actually includes.
