Volk Accountant vs Cybooks
Both are built for Cyprus and both prepare the VAT return and the VIES statement. Here is where they actually differ — with a source and a date checked behind every detail.

Volk Accountant and Cybooks compared
Cybooks and Volk Accountant are both accounting tools built specifically for Cyprus, and both prepare the Cyprus VAT return and the monthly VIES statement. The clearest difference is language: Volk Accountant sends each invoice in the language the client reads and translates the line items automatically, while Cybooks documents invoices in English and Greek without stating whether line items are translated. On VAT rates, Cybooks states that Cyprus has four (19, 9, 5 and 0%) and does not mention the 3% rate, whereas Volk Accountant lets you enter any rate. On plans, Volk Accountant publishes that VAT-4 and VIES are in the Starter plan at 29 euro a month; the Cybooks pricing page names VAT and VIES only in its 540-euro-a-month concierge package and does not say which software plan includes them.

Which one fits you
The difference is not language, it is the role: software alongside your accountant — or a provider that takes the bookkeeping over.
You want independent software and are keeping your accountant
- You already have an accountant — or want to stay free to choose who checks your books
- VAT-4, VIES and reverse charge all come out of the same books
- Your accountant gets a dedicated portal laid out like Tax For All, in every plan
- Invoices in your client’s language, with line items translated automatically
You want to hand the bookkeeping over entirely — from €540 a month
- You have no accountant and do not want to look for one
- A licensed Cyprus accountant keeps the books and files VAT and VIES
- Payroll, year-end accounts and the statutory audit sit in the same package
- This is a service, not software — the €29 and €67 software plans do not include it
Everything that matters for Cyprus bookkeeping
The full side-by-side. Greyed-out rows are the ones where both do the same — they are here because leaving them out would flatter us.
Neither of these is a general-purpose accounting package with Cyprus bolted on. Both are built around the Cyprus VAT return and the VIES statement, both connect to Cypriot banks, and both read receipts automatically. The greyed-out rows below are the ones where we come out level — they are here because leaving them out would flatter us.

Reverse charge matters more in Cyprus than most software admits: if you buy services from outside Cyprus — hosting, advertising, contractors — you account for the VAT yourself. Both tools document this explicitly, which is more than can be said for several competitors.
How the VIES return and the VAT return work in Cyprus is covered in the linked guides. Both also give your accountant their own way in. Ours is a dedicated accountant portal included in every plan, with read access and exports as PDF, Excel and JSON — laid out like Tax For All, the portal Cyprus accountants already use every day, so there is nothing new to learn. Cybooks sells a separate practice-management module for firms, which is a different product: it manages the firm, not the client’s books.
If you would rather not weigh up just these two: the overview of all nine providers for Cyprus groups them by use case — with the same sources and check dates.
What sets Volk Accountant and Cybooks apart?
Both are accounting tools built specifically for Cyprus. Three differences carry the decision.
We say which plan includes VAT
At Volk Accountant, VAT-4 and VIES sit in Starter at €29. Cybooks assigns the VAT return to no software plan: neither Standard at €29 nor Premium at €67 names VAT or VIES, and both terms appear only in the €540-a-month service package.
Line items are translated
Volk Accountant sends every invoice in the language your customer reads and translates the line items automatically. Cybooks documents invoices in English and Greek but says nothing about translating line items.
Portal included, not a €49 module
With Volk Accountant, accountant access is included in every plan, with a portal laid out like Tax For All. Cybooks sells theirs as a separate module at €49 a month.
Plans: what is actually included
Both cards show the same list. That way you see not only what a plan can do, but what it is missing.
- YesVAT-4 and VIES stated for this plan
- YesScan a receipt straight from your phone
- NoInvoices in Greek
- Yes3% rate supported
- YesAccountant portal included in the plan
- not publishedVAT-4 and VIES stated for this plan
- not publishedScan a receipt straight from your phone
- YesInvoices in Greek
- No3% rate supported
- NoAccountant portal included in the plan
Our Starter already covers the Cyprus VAT return and VIES, and the accountant portal is included in it — Cybooks sells theirs as a separate module at €49 a month. Whether Cybooks Premium at €67 covers the VAT return is not published, which is why the two columns are not a like-for-like price comparison. Greek invoices are something Cybooks can do today and we cannot: ours is announced but not shipped. Automatic translation of line items runs the other way and sits in our Business plan at €49.
- YesSoftware covering all Cyprus obligations
- YesVAT-4 and VIES stated for this plan
- NoAn accountant keeps the books and files
- YesWorks with your own accountant
- YesPrice independent of transaction volume and headcount
- YesSoftware covering all Cyprus obligations
- YesVAT-4 and VIES stated for this plan
- YesAn accountant keeps the books and files
- not publishedWorks with your own accountant
- NoPrice independent of transaction volume and headcount
These two plans are not the same thing, and that is deliberate: Cybooks names VAT and VIES only in the All Inclusive package, and there the work is done by a person. If you already have an accountant you would be paying for that service twice — and tying yourself to a price that rises with transaction volume and headcount.
Cyprus has five VAT rates, not four
19, 9, 5, 3 and 0%. The 3% rate is the one most often forgotten.
Cybooks states on its VAT page that it “applies the correct Cyprus VAT rate (19%, 9%, 5%, 0%)” and on its home page that “Cyprus has four VAT rates (19%, 9%, 5%, 0%)”. That list is written as complete, and the 3% rate is not in it.
| Volk Accountant | Cybooks | |
|---|---|---|
| VAT rates documented | 19%, 0%, freely selectable | 19, 9, 5, 0% |
| 3% rate supportedCyprus has five rates: 19, 9, 5, 3 and 0%. The 3% rate applies to certain books and services, among others. | Yes | No |
| Any rate freely enterable | Yes | not published |
Which rate applies when is covered in our guide to VAT registration in Cyprus. Two things are worth being precise about. First, we cannot see inside Cybooks’ software — we can only read what it publishes, and what it publishes omits the 3% rate. Second, the two products solve this differently: Cybooks advertises picking the rate automatically from the product type, while Volk Accountant has you choose the treatment and lets you type any percentage. Automation is convenient until the rate you need is not in the list. Cyprus changed its rates twice in the past two years, which is an argument for the free field.
Languages: the clearest difference
This is the point that decides most cases, and it is not close.
| Volk Accountant | Cybooks | |
|---|---|---|
| Interface languages | English and German | not published |
| Invoice languages | English and German | English and Greek |
| Automatic translation of invoice line items | Yes | not published |
| Further languages announcedAnnounced means: not available yet. | Greek and Russian announced | not published |
Volk Accountant was built for businesses whose clients and authorities do not read the same language. You write a line item once and the invoice goes out in the language your client reads, with the same layout in both. English and German are available today; Greek and Russian are announced.
Cybooks documents English and Greek invoices — the right pair for a Cyprus-domestic business, and a limitation the moment a client, a contract or an accountant works in another language. Note also what Cybooks does not publish: it says nothing about the language of its web interface, so the table shows a dash rather than a guess based on the website’s language.
Where does your data sit with Volk Accountant and Cybooks?
Server location is one of the few things you can check before you sign up rather than after.
Our servers are in Frankfurt and your data is stored in the EU — invoices, receipts and the whole ledger, not just master records. What that means in detail — encryption, backups, access control — is set out on our page on data security. Where a provider’s infrastructure sits matters for GDPR.
Cybooks states that “Your data never leaves the European Union”, while its own privacy policy names Amazon Web Services and adds that this “may also result in the transfer of personal data to the parent company of AWS in the United States”. We are quoting both because they are both published by the provider — decide for yourself which one describes your situation, and ask them if it matters to you.
Cybooks and Volk Accountant: common questions
Which accounting software is better for Cyprus: Cybooks or Volk Accountant?
It mostly comes down to one question: do you already have an accountant? If you do, Volk Accountant is the obvious choice, because it is software only and does not sell bookkeeping. Cybooks staffs its own bookkeepers in the All Inclusive package and therefore sits alongside your accountant; Volk Accountant works with them instead, and gives your accountant a dedicated portal in every plan, laid out like Tax For All. For any Cyprus company that issues quotes and invoices and wants its books kept properly, Volk Accountant covers the obligations in full: VAT-4, VIES, reverse charge and every one of the five Cyprus VAT rates. Cybooks is the better choice if you want to hand the bookkeeping over completely — its All Inclusive package, from €540 a month, puts a licensed Cyprus accountant on your books.
What are the VAT rates in Cyprus?
Cyprus has five rates: 19% as the standard rate, 9% and 5% as reduced rates, 3% as the super-reduced rate, and 0%. The 3% rate is the one most often missed; it applies to certain books, newspapers and a small set of services. Volk Accountant lets you enter any percentage freely, so future changes are covered too. Cybooks states on its own website that Cyprus has "four VAT rates (19%, 9%, 5%, 0%)" and does not mention the 3% rate (checked 16 September 2026).
Who actually files the VAT return — me, my accountant, or the software?
With Volk Accountant the VAT-4 and VIES figures come out of your books, and you or your accountant file them; every plan includes a dedicated accountant portal with read access and exports as PDF, Excel and JSON. The same applies to the Cybooks software plans. Only in the All Inclusive package at €540 a month does a licensed accountant file on your behalf.
Is Cybooks or Volk Accountant cheaper?
Both start at €29 a month, but ours includes the Cyprus VAT return and VIES at that price. Cybooks does not publish which of its software plans contains the VAT return: neither Standard at €29 nor Premium at €67 names VAT or VIES, and both terms appear only in the All Inclusive service package at €540 a month (checked 18 September 2026). So the honest statement is not that we are cheaper by a fixed amount, but that we say what our €29 covers and Cybooks does not.
Can I try Volk Accountant while Cybooks is still running?
Yes. The 14-day trial needs no card and no cancellation at your current provider. The sensible way is to record one closed month in parallel: the same invoices and receipts in both systems, then compare the VAT figures. If they match, you know the move is clean before you cancel anything.
Can Volk Accountant import my data from Cybooks?
Volk Accountant imports data as CSV, XLSX and JSON. Whether an export from Cybooks maps cleanly depends on the file you get out of it, so the honest answer is: send us the export and we will tell you before you commit to anything.
Which tool do accountants in Cyprus use?
Both serve firms, but they solve different halves of the problem. Volk Accountant includes an accountant portal in every plan, with read access and exports; it is laid out like Tax For All, the portal Cyprus accountants already work in daily, so there is nothing new to learn. Cybooks sells a separate practice-management module for running the firm itself, free for twelve months when we checked. If you need to manage your practice, that is something we do not offer.
